Ensuring the required refurbishments are completed on our Orangutan Exhibit is a high priority for the Zoo and closely aligned with our core values. This new exhibit will provide much needed outdoor space, which will ultimately improve the lives of these intelligent primates. It will also significantly expand their current living space and creating improved enrichment opportunities for our orangutans.
Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered. Their numbers continue to decline sharply: from 12,000 in 1994 to 7,300 in 2008, and likely many fewer today. Completing these exhibit refurbishments will allow the Zoo to contribute more actively to initiatives such as the Orangutan Species Survival Plan, which will help to ensure that this species is preserved.
